Take the Pono Pledge

Pono, a beautiful Hawaiian word, has multiple meanings. Basically, it means respectful, correct, goodness, uprightness, and moral. In this case, it is in the context of respecting the islands of Hawaii. The basic concept evolved with climate change, and the effects being found in the increase of tourism by the Island of Hawaii Visitors Bureau and Hawaii County.

The intent is to encourage safe, responsible and respectful tourism. The principles cover a wide range of situations for visitors and residents as well. Read more and take the Pono Pledge.

I will mindfully seek wonder,
but not wander where I do not belong.
I will malama (care for) land and sea,
and admire wildlife only from afar.

Cruises, Whale Watching, Lana’i

  • Pacific Whale Foundation has a host of tours that leave from both Lahaina and Ma’alaea Harbor. A non-profit organization founded in 1980 to save whales from extinction, their mission is to protect our oceans through science and advocacy. Groceries

Food Shopping

There are many good markets on island as well as farmer’s markets. With every booking, we include a Maika’i Card for discounts on groceries at Food Land. You’ll also receive a coupon for 10% on purchases over $50. We like Food Land because it supports local growers! There is also a SafeWay, Costco, Wholefoods, and at least three health-food stores. One is Hawaiian Moons which we use and it’s close to our condo in Kihei. Alive and Well and Down to Earth are in Kahului. Alive and Well is a good place to stop for lunch if you’re on that side of the island, or coming from Kahului Airport.
